2020 Denavolo Catavela Bianco MAGNUM
Catavela is the most immediate expression of Denavolo, Giulio Armani’s personal project in the hills above Travo, between the Val Trebbia and Val Nure. Armani founded the estate in 2005 after years of work in the vineyards and cellar of La Stoppa, bringing the same respect for native grapes, spontaneous fermentation and long observation to a smaller, more personal landscape.
The wine comes from Denavolo’s higher and younger vineyards, rooted in stony limestone soils. The blend brings together the white grapes of the Piacenza hills, including Malvasia di Candia Aromatica, Ortrugo, Marsanne and Trebbiano, with small amounts of other local varieties.
These are white grapes handled with the logic of red-wine production. The fruit undergoes a short period of skin contact in stainless steel, followed by spontaneous fermentation without temperature control. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration and without added sulphur, preserving its natural aromatic intensity and lightly tannic structure.
In the glass, Catavela shows a luminous gold-to-amber colour. Peach, mandarin, lemon peel and bergamot are joined by chamomile, dried herbs and fresh grape skin. The palate is bright and gently textured, with citrus bitterness, saline freshness and a clean, grippy finish.
The magnum format suits the wine particularly well. The larger bottle encourages slower evolution and keeps the fruit, acidity and aromatic lift in balance, while the generous format reflects the wine’s natural place at a shared table.
Catavela is not built around extraction or heaviness. It is an energetic, highly drinkable skin-contact white that makes the language of Denavolo clear without sacrificing complexity.
