2023 Foradori Fuoripista Pinot Grigio

Fuoripista means “off-piste”, and the name is exact. This is Pinot Grigio taken away from the familiar world of crisp, pale, neutral whites and brought into a more textural, serious and contemplative register.

The wine is the result of a collaboration between Foradori and Marco Devigili, a biodynamic grower from Campo Rotaliano. Together, they use Pinot Grigio not as a simple aromatic white grape, but as a variety capable of structure, colour and quiet complexity when treated with patience.

The crucial element is the use of tinajas: large clay amphorae that allow the wine to remain in long contact with its skins. Fuoripista spends more than 8 months on the skins inside these vessels. This is why the wine is not white in the conventional sense. Pinot Grigio has naturally pink-grey skins, and with long maceration those skins give colour, fine tannin, savoury depth and a gently grippy texture.

The tinaja matters because it is not oak. It does not add vanilla, toast or sweetness. Instead, it gives the wine a slow, quiet environment in which fruit, skins and lees can integrate. The result is a wine with the structure of skin contact, but without heaviness or obvious extraction.

In the glass, the 2023 shows a copper orange colour with delicate pink reflections. The nose is expressive but restrained, with grapefruit, mandarin, green melon, wild strawberry, dried herbs and a light floral note. On the palate, it is juicy and elegant, with fresh acidity, gentle tannic grip and a long, lightly mineral finish.

Fuoripista 2023 is a serious ramato style Pinot Grigio, but not an aggressive one. It is tactile, savoury and quietly aromatic, designed for drinkers who want to understand how a familiar grape can become something far more layered through skin contact and amphora ageing.
