2022 Occhipinti 'PT' Frappato
From the historic Contrada La Chiusa in Vittoria, Pettineo is a rare Frappato sourced from vines planted around a monumental 60-year-old training structure transformed into an espalier system, where the plants climb through trellises shaped by time and human hands. The result is a vineyard of sculptural presence, deeply rooted in both landscape and tradition.
The wine is made from 100% Frappato, grown at 217 metres above sea level on red sandy soils over tuff, with old vines averaging 70 years of age and a density of 6,500 vines per hectare. Cultivated biodynamically with organic certification and no chemical intervention, the vineyard is farmed with a strong focus on balance and longevity.
Fermentation takes place in cement tanks with indigenous yeasts and around 20 days of skin maceration. The wine then ages for 20 months in large oval cement tanks, followed by 4 months in bottle, preserving purity, texture, and aromatic precision.
In the glass, it shows a luminous, delicate ruby red. The nose is refined and expressive, with aromas of red cherry, wild strawberry, rose petals, and subtle herbal tones over a fine mineral backbone. On the palate, it is silky and vibrant, with elegant tannins, sustained acidity, and a long, finely textured finish that reflects both Frappato’s delicacy and the depth of old vines.
Quintessentially Occhipinti, a benchmark expression of Frappato from a single historic contrada, combining elegance, tension, and quiet complexity. Suited to those who appreciate subtle, food-oriented reds with energy, detail, and a quiet capacity to evolve in bottle.
