2022 Occhipinti 'PT' Frappato

Sale price$150.00

A contrada is a traditional rural district whose identity extends beyond a single vineyard boundary. For Occhipinti, these named places offer a way to examine how Frappato changes across the landscape of Vittoria. The grape remains the same, while variations in sand, limestone, underlying rock and vine history produce wines with clearly different textures and structures.

'PT' Pettineo is represented by La Chiusa, a historic old-vine parcel planted on deep red sand over a layer of tuff. Many of its original bush vines were trained onto trellises by the previous owner and now form imposing, almost sculptural canopies. Compared with Occhipinti’s more limestone-driven sites, the deeper sandy soils of Pettineo tend to produce fuller fruit, silkier tannins and sustained acidity.

Made entirely from Frappato, PT ferments in concrete tanks with indigenous yeasts and spends 20 days on the skins. It then matures for 20 months in oval concrete tanks, followed by 4 months in bottle. This restrained élevage protects the fragrance and supple texture of the old-vine fruit.

In the glass, it shows a luminous ruby colour. The nose is generous and finely detailed, with wild strawberry, red cherry, pomegranate, rose, sweet herbs and gentle spice. The palate is ripe, graceful and flowing, with juicy fruit, polished tannins and a long, vibrant line of acidity.

Pettineo is the most silken and fruit-driven of the three Frappato contrade. Its old vines and deeper red sands give it breadth and generosity, while the natural freshness of Frappato keeps the wine poised and articulate.
