2021 Barbacàn 'Söl' Valtellina Superiore
'Söl' comes from Valgella, one of the historic sub-zones of Valtellina Superiore, where steep terraces, exposed rock and mineral-rich soils shape a particularly tense and aromatic expression of the valley. This is Barbacàn in a more focused and structured register: less about immediate ease, more about altitude, stone, tannin and time.
The wine is made entirely from Chiavennasca. Although often described as the local Valtellina name for Nebbiolo, Chiavennasca should not be reduced to a simple synonym. Nebbiolo reached Valchiavenna and Valtellina centuries ago and adapted over time to the region’s soils, altitude and mountain climate. Documented locally since the sixteenth century, it has developed such a distinctive identity that many consider it a Sondrio cultivar in its own right.
In Söl, this identity becomes clear. The wine carries the floral lift and fine tannic line associated with Nebbiolo, but with a more Alpine profile: brighter acidity, lighter frame, mineral tension and a cool, savoury edge.
In the glass, the 2021 shows a clear ruby-garnet colour. The nose is refined and lifted, with red cherry, wild raspberry, violet, dried herbs, liquorice, pepper and a subtle ferrous note. On the palate, it is taut and finely structured, with fresh acidity, balanced tannins and a long, stony finish.
Söl 2021 is a serious mountain red: elegant rather than heavy, firm rather than broad, and built around the precision of Valgella. It speaks quietly, but with real authority.
