2021 Barbacàn 'Jazpémi' Valtellina Superiore
'Jazpémi' comes from a dramatic patchwork of terraces that appears to hang directly from the mountainside. Planted with century-old vines, this classified Valgella cru produces a wine of remarkable fragrance and openness, expressing its character early while continuing to develop complexity in bottle.
The blend is 95% Chiavennasca, completed by Rossola and Pignola, two separate indigenous grape varieties preserved within the old vineyard.
Chiavennasca originated through Nebbiolo’s centuries-long adaptation to Valchiavenna and Valtellina. The local soils, elevation and climate gradually shaped a vine with characteristics sufficiently individual that many growers and observers regard it as a cultivar of Sondrio rather than something entirely interchangeable with Piedmontese Nebbiolo.
In the glass, Jazpémi shows a clear ruby-garnet colour. The nose is expressive and graceful, with wild raspberry, red cherry, violet, white pepper, anise and mountain herbs. The palate is sappy and finely structured, combining juicy red fruit, polished tannins and a long, savoury mineral finish.
Where 'Söl' is initially more reserved, Jazpémi is naturally communicative. It is an old-vine Valtellina of fragrance, clarity and quiet authority.
