2018 Château Croix Mouton Bordeaux Supérieur
Château Croix Mouton is a Merlot-led estate on clay and alluvial soils near the Dordogne, producing a style of Bordeaux built around softness, ripe fruit and early accessibility rather than heavy extraction. The 2018 vintage comes from a 70-hectare vineyard with an average vine age of 37 years.
The final blend is 97% Merlot and 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermentation takes place in concrete and stainless steel vats, with a long maceration of roughly 20–30 days, depending on the variety. The wine is then raised for several months on fine lees, with around 25% in barrique, and the rest in neutral vessels.
In the glass we have ripe blackberries, plums and black cherries lead the nose; followed by cedar, cocoa, tobacco and a touch of sweet spice. The palate is medium-bodied and generous, with soft tannins, fresh acidity and a rounded texture that makes the wine easy to approach now.
This is classic right-bank-influenced Bordeaux in a polished, modern style: plenty of Merlot fruit, enough structure for the table, and no need for long cellaring before it becomes enjoyable.
Grilled meats, roast beef, lamb, pork ribs, mushrooms or ragù preparations, or aged cheeses.
