2018 Baricci Brunello di Montalcino
Few producers are as inseparable from Montosoli as Baricci. Every estate vineyard lies on this celebrated hill north of Montalcino, allowing the family’s Brunello to offer a remarkably focused expression of one place rather than a composition drawn from different parts of the denomination.
The wine is made entirely from Sangiovese Grosso, the traditional Montalcino expression of Sangiovese historically associated with Brunello. Naturally high in acidity and tannin, the grape finds an exceptional balance on Montosoli. The hill’s cooler conditions extend the ripening season, while its rocky marine soils, rich in marl, quartz, schist and ancient fossils, provide drainage and give the wine its characteristic mineral definition.
The 2018 comes from south- and south-east-facing vineyards at 300 metres above sea level. It is matured in large Slavonian oak casks, preserving the perfume, savoury character and structural clarity of the Sangiovese Grosso rather than covering it with overt oak.
In the glass, it shows a clear ruby colour moving towards garnet. The nose unfolds with Morello cherry, black raspberry, blood orange, rose, dried herbs, tobacco and crushed stone. The palate is concentrated but graceful, with vivid red fruit, mouth-watering acidity and long, chalky tannins. Balsamic spice, liquorice and a distinctly mineral note remain through the persistent finish.
This is a quintessential Montosoli Brunello: structured without heaviness, powerful without losing precision, and built around the natural tension and transparency of Sangiovese Grosso.
