2018 Barbacàn 'Livèl' Valtellina Superiore Riserva
'Livèl' comes from one of Barbacàn’s highest and most historic classified vineyards. The parcel was planted by the Sega family’s ancestors during the 1920s and lies between 550 and 600 metres above sea level, where extremely thin soils naturally restrict the yield of the old vines.
The blend is composed of 90% Chiavennasca, with Chiavennaschino, Rossola and Pignola. Rossola and Pignola are distinct indigenous varieties, while Chiavennaschino is a separate local vine related to the broader Chiavennasca tradition.
Chiavennasca developed from Nebbiolo after centuries of adaptation to the mountain environment of Valchiavenna and Valtellina. Documented in the region since the sixteenth century, it has become so closely attuned to the local soils, altitude and microclimate that many consider it a native Sondrio cultivar rather than simply Nebbiolo grown in another place.
Livèl matures for 3 years in large traditional chestnut botti, followed by 2 years in bottle before release. This extended ageing gives the wine time to integrate its tannins while preserving the fragrance and weightless concentration that define high-altitude Valtellina.
In the glass, it shows a luminous ruby-garnet colour. The nose is layered and haunting, with red and dark berries, dried rose, woodland herbs, forest floor, spice and crushed stone. The palate is concentrated without heaviness, with fine but persistent tannins and a long, composed finish.
Livèl is one of Barbacàn’s most important wines, a cellar-worthy Riserva shaped by old vines, elevation, native grape diversity and patient maturation.
