2017 Domaine Chandon de Briailles Corton Grand Cru
Domaine Chandon de Briailles farms four parcels across 1.4 hectares on the Corton Hill. The site faces the Saône plain and receives the morning sun. Its soils balance iron-rich clay with limestone, giving the wine depth, mineral tension and a distinctive savoury structure. The domaine works biodynamically, with horse-drawn cultivation and a restrained cellar approach designed to preserve the identity of the vineyard.
The wine was fermented with indigenous yeasts in wooden vats using a proportion of whole bunches. It matured for 18 months in oak barrels, with no more than 20% new oak, and was bottled without fining or filtration.
The 2017 vintage shows bright cherry, wild raspberry and black fruit, followed by rose, violet, blood orange, sandalwood and gentle woodland spice. The palate is silky and energetic, with ripe fruit held by fine-grained tannins and a firm mineral core. The structure is substantial without becoming heavy, and the long finish brings together red berries, savoury herbs and iron-rich earth.
This is a graceful Corton with enough openness to show well now after air, but the balance and underlying grip support extended ageing.
Roast duck, beef fillet with or without sauces, mushroom risotto or pasta, truffle dishes, aged cheeses.
