2017 Château Feytit-Clinet
Château Feytit-Clinet is a small Pomerol estate on the western section of the plateau, in the sector between Trotanoy and Latour à Pomerol. The vineyard covers only a few hectares, but its position places it within one of Bordeaux’s most concentrated landscapes of distinguished Merlot vineyards.
The soils combine gravel, clay and sand, with iron-rich material present beneath parts of the vineyard. Gravel improves drainage and stores warmth, clay provides water retention and density, and the iron-bearing subsoil contributes to the dark, earthy and mineral character often associated with Pomerol.
As throughout Pomerol, there is no official cru classification. Feytit-Clinet’s reputation is based on its terroir and the work of Jérémy Chasseuil, whose direction has given the estate a clear identity built around concentrated fruit, substantial structure and careful maturation.
The 2017 is composed of 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. It matured for 16 months in French oak, 65% of it being new. The high proportion of Merlot gives the wine its depth and broad texture, while Cabernet Franc adds floral lift and a more aromatic edge.
In the glass, the wine is dark and concentrated; with blackberry, black plum and black cherry joined by violet, liquorice, graphite, smoke and cocoa. The palate is full and firmly structured, with dense fruit, fine-grained tannins and fresh acidity carrying the wine into a long, savoury finish.
Feytit-Clinet 2017 shows that this Bordeaux vintage could still produce serious wine from well-situated Pomerol vineyards. Its fruit is ripe and generous, but the mineral structure and tannins give it the definition required for continued development in bottle.
