2016 Maison Roche de Bellene Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Maison Roche de Bellene was established by Nicolas Potel in 2008, following the creation of Domaine de Bellene. The Maison works as a négociant-éleveur, sourcing from respected growers and taking responsibility for selection, vinification and maturation in order to present the identity of Burgundy’s individual climats.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze holds Grand Cru status, the highest level in Burgundy’s appellation system. The classification belongs to the vineyard itself, not to the producer. Clos de Bèze is also one of the earliest named crus in Burgundy: it was recorded as property of the Abbey of Bèze in the seventh century, and its historical identity has endured for more than a millennium.

The climat lies on the east-facing slope of Gevrey-Chambertin. Brown limestone soils, stony scree and Jurassic marl vary across the slope, creating a complex pattern of drainage, warmth and water retention. The official appellation was recognised in 1937, although the vineyard’s reputation was established centuries earlier.

The 2016 vintage followed a devastating spring frost with a warm, dry summer and an excellent late growing season. The result was a very small quantity of Pinot Noir with ripe fruit, fresh acidity and the structure required for long ageing.

In the glass, the wine shows red and black cherry, raspberry and cassis, followed by violet, peony, clove, cedar and underbrush. The palate is expansive and finely layered, with polished tannins, mineral tension and a long finish that moves through fruit, spice and savoury earth.

Chambertin-Clos de Bèze carries both historical and viticultural importance. This 2016 expresses that heritage through depth, aromatic complexity and the capacity to evolve over several decades.
