2016 La Stoppa 'Macchiona' Emilia Rosso

Sale price$85.00

Set among the rolling hills of the Emilian Colli Piacentini hills, where clay-rich soils and traditional vineyards define the landscape, 'Macchiona' takes its name from an old farmhouse surrounded by some of the estate’s most historic red plantings. It is a wine deeply rooted in place, reflecting the ancient agricultural character of this part of Emilia.

A blend of 50% Barbera and 50% Bonarda, 'Macchiona' is produced from organically farmed vineyards with vines ranging from 15 to 40 years of age. The wine undergoes a maceration of around 40 days on the skins, followed by spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. It is then aged in a combination of large Slavonian oak casks and vats, before further refinement in bottle, with no filtration or added sulphur.

In the glass, it shows a deep, opaque ruby red. The nose is intense and characterful with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, plum and gravelly undertones. On the palate, it is rich, deep, ripe and finely structured, with chalky tannins, vibrant acidity, and a long, powerful finish that reflects both variety and terroir.

A traditional, uncompromising expression of Barbera and Bonarda, combining depth, energy, and a distinctly old fashioned cloak.

100% Organic.

Perfect with rich meat dishes, slow-cooked stews and aged cheeses.
