2016 Château Haut-Batailley

Sale price$260.00

Château Haut-Batailley comes from Pauillac, on the Left Bank of the Gironde Estuary. The appellation is built on well-drained rises of Garonne gravel mixed with sand and clay. These poor, stony soils force vines to root deeply and provide the warm, free-draining conditions in which Cabernet Sauvignon develops its combination of cassis fruit, firm tannin, graphite and exceptional longevity.

Haut-Batailley carries Fifth Growth status from the historic Batailley property ranked in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. After the estate was divided in the twentieth century, Haut-Batailley retained that classified identity. The term refers to its position in the historic five-level hierarchy of leading Médoc properties, not to a score applied to this particular bottle.

The 2016 was produced under the Brest-Borie family, shortly before the estate was acquired by the Cazes family in 2017. The final blend is 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot, a strongly Cabernet-led composition that reflects both Pauillac and the long, dry second half of the 2016 growing season.

Harvest ran from 3 to 10 October, one of the later harvests in the property’s history. The wine spent approximately three weeks in vat, with controlled fermentation and gentle extraction, before ageing for 16 months in French oak barrels, 60% new.

In the glass, the wine shows deep ruby-purple colour. Cassis, blackberry and black cherry lead the nose, followed by cedar, graphite, tobacco, violet, mint and dark spice. The palate is precise and firmly structured, with concentrated black fruit, fresh acidity and fine Cabernet tannins extending through a persistent finish.

The quality of the 2016 vintage is expressed here through proportion rather than excess. Haut-Batailley combines the authority expected of Pauillac with enough freshness and tannic definition to develop cedar, leather, tobacco and earthy complexity over many years.

Roast beef, lamb cutlets, slow-cooked beef cheek, delicate duck preparations such as cassoulets, aged cheese platters.
