2023 Standish 'The Standish' Shiraz
The Standish is the most grounded and classically Barossan wine in the quartet: a single-vineyard Shiraz from the Laycock Family Vineyard in Greenock, planted on its own roots over ironstone gravels, layered schist, and solid ironstone bedrock. It carries the density and authority of the western Barossa, but in the 2023 vintage that power is shaped by freshness, detail, and a long, cool-season sense of drive.
In the glass, it shows a deep, glass-staining ruby-purple colour. The nose is dark and commanding, with black cherry, mulberry, plum, licorice, sandalwood, dried rose, roasted meat, graphite, ironstone, and exotic spice. On the palate, it is broad, earthy, and substantial, with firm tannins, dense fruit, savoury depth, and a long mineral finish. This is not the lifted or perfumed side of Standish; it is the wine of weight, soil, tannin, and Barossa authority.
A serious, cellar-worthy Shiraz with density and power, but also enough precision to keep the whole structure moving.
Perfect with grilled beef, lamb shoulder, roasted game, braised meats, charred vegetables, and aged hard cheeses.
