Hidden within a natural amphitheater of ancient lava flows, Chiusa Spagnolo in contrada Zottorinoto is one of the most singular and secluded sites in Cornelissen’s portfolio. Planted around 1925 and sitting at a lower altitude of approximately 620 meters, this ungrafted vineyard is surrounded by volcanic rock, creating a protected yet demanding microclimate. The result is a wine of depth and structure, often more introspective in character, where time and patience are essential to reveal its full potential.

In the glass, it shows a luminous ruby red with garnet reflections, suggesting both elegance and underlying power. The nose is deep and evolving, with notes of dark red berries, dried flowers, and earthy undertones, gradually opening to reveal hints of spice, resin, and a subtle volcanic smokiness that reflects its unique surroundings.

On the palate, the wine is firm, structured, and profoundly expressive. Tannins are more pronounced here, giving a sense of grip and longevity, yet remain finely textured. There is a quiet intensity to the wine, with layers of fruit, mineral tension, and savory complexity unfolding over time. The finish is long, persistent, and slightly austere in youth, pointing toward a wine built for aging and contemplation.

Best suited to rich, slow-cooked dishes, game, or enjoyed in a more meditative setting, this wine stands apart as one of Etna’s most distinctive expressions. A cru defined by isolation, structure, and a deep volcanic minerality.
